Frank Stellmacher correspondence [manuscript], 1898-1899.

Letters written to Frank Stellmacher, a soldier from Albany, Oregon, who served in the Philippines with the Oregon volunteers in the Spanish-American war. The letters are from family members and friends in the Albany area and include details of local events, family matters, and personal information. Many letters are from Stellmacher's sisters Ella and Alice, and his brother Allen. Of note is a lengthy letter, October 10, 1898, from a friend, Edgar Stewart, describing in great detail the events of the Astoria (Or.) regatta.

Frank Stellmacher was a first generation German American, born in Wisconsin. He joined the Oregon Volunteers at the age of 21 and served first in camps in Oregon and California before sailing to the Philippines. Muster rolls show him as "on daily duty as bridge guard, Apr. 21 to May 26 '99...sick in division hospital June 7-9, '99, in line of duty."
